About Me:
Hi future musicians! I'm Mark Griffin and I have been teaching kids, teenagers, and adults of all ages the art and fun of music here at Hoyt Music since 2006. I have 21 years of musical experience, specializing in piano, guitar, and drums. Being 28 years old, I have a firm grip on the importance of teaching the classics of old as well as the relevance and popularity of current music.
I grew up in Methuen MA where I studied piano under Gail Michaud starting at the age of 7. As I grew older I developed a desire to learn other instruments to widen my musical knowledge. My greatest musical influence was my grandfather, who was an amazing jazz musician who performed in countless jazz bands and ensembles throughout his life, as well as serving in the army band during World War II in the Pacific. He initially encouraged my music education and helped fuel my drive until the day he died. When I'm not teaching I perform with my band The Ugly Lights, as well as periodic piano performances. I currently live in Haverhill MA with my cat Gizmo. Besides music I enjoy reading science fiction and fantasy, and love watching the Pats, Sox, Celts, and B's.
I pride myself on my ability to tailor my teaching to each individual student's musical preference and learning style in order to maximize their potential. I try to keep a relaxed atmosphere during lessons as to not intimidate students, all while maintaining structure and productivity. I try my hardest to make each lesson a fun, and educational experience. I use multiple varied educational tools in order to keep each lesson fresh and interesting including tablet touch screen applications, viewing online music videos/performances for student inspiration, usage of a drum machine to aid in teaching rhythm in a fun exciting way, as well as many others. I hold yearly recitals in order to allow all my students the opportunity to showcase their ability and advancement. It is truly rewarding to see the incredible progress my students make year after year at these concerts.
Music has been a hugely rewarding part of most of my life, and sometimes I am in awe that I get to spread my knowledge for a living. I truly put all I have into each lesson and want nothing more than my students to succeed.
